USAID-Heshimu Bahari Activity

It is a five year activity that aims to enhance the ecological resilience and productivity of high marine biodiversity areas in Tanzania. The activity will work with government agencies, communities, private sector and civil society to establish an enabling environment and science driven framework for sustainable marine protected areas and wild-caught fishery co-management to help reduce threats to marine and coastal biodiversity within Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar archipelago.

Prior to inception, the activity has engaged Asuta to conduct Benthic Ecological Survey (BES) in near shore waters along Tanzania Mainland coast from Mkinga District south to Bagamoyo District excluding Tanga Coelacanth Marine Park to south of Dar es Salam including KigambonI, Mkuranga,Kilwa, Lindi and Mafia.The objective of the activity is to generate systematic baseline data to be
incorporated into a multiparameter analysis for Marine Spatial Planning to identify priority marine areas for protection and management.
